Lessons may vary depending on your concerns and interests, but the basic principles are always the same. Your teacher will ask you to do a simple movement. This may be something as basic as sitting down, walking, or using your voice. The teacher will then bring to your attention any excess tension you are bringing to the movement and by using her hands will guide you through the movement in a freer manner. There are no specific exercises and no necessary equipment. The work is safe for anyone, as it can be adapted to physical limitations.

Students of the Alexander Technique generally report that they feel more relaxed, lighter and freer in their movement after a lesson. They also experience a greater sense of awareness of how they use their body. This means that they are able to help themselves to move better not just in lessons, but in their day-to-day life. This effect is supported by the recent back pain study in the British Medical Journal, which reported significant long-term benefits after a short course of lessons in the Alexander Technique.
